World Orphans Day Celebration

Celebrating World Orphans Day, Qatar Charity Indonesia (QCI) conducted a series of events in Jakarta and Aceh. During 22 March until 6 April 2014, a number of 820 orphans from Aceh, Jakarta, West Java, Banten, and Yogyakarta were involved in many activities. 

 

On 22 March 2014, located in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park), East Jakarta, a number of 40 orphans from Jakarta, Aceh & Yogyakarta enjoyed some games, storytelling,  and art performances.  An orphan named Morris from Yogyakarta showed his skill as little magician. 

 

The celebration was followed by Aceh branch on 31 March 2014. It brought 80 orphans from Banda Aceh to a farming and livestock land named Aceh Livestock. The objectives are (1) orphans know the daily life in a farm; (2) orphans learn to respect the work of others, in this case the farmers, and (3) orphans  learn to care the environment. Here, they learned a range of crops, different stages of growth, plantation, and harvesting cycle as well as how plants are transformed into foodstuff. They also got information about hand milking cow and goat,  life cycle of cows and goats, and petting and feeding goat and cow. 

 

The peak of events was held in parallel in three different places and areas in Aceh and Jakarta on 6 April 2014.  QCI conducted orphans competitions in colouring, speech, tahfiz Quran and quiz.  Each, except colouring, was followed by orphans in three level of education, namely elementary, junior high school, and senior high school. The event was aimed at (1) assisting orphans  to learn how to compete in good manner one each other, (2) encouraging orphans to develop and appreciate their skills and capacities, (3) engaging orphans to actively involve in social activity and get know one each others, and (4) growing self-confidence of orphans

 

In Aceh, the competitions involved 250 orphans were organized in two regencies. First in Aceh Tamiang for orphans in regencies of Aceh Tamiang and Langsa. Second in Lhokseumawe for orphans in Lhokseumawe, North Aceh, and Bireun. 

 

Meanwhile, at Bumi Perkemahan & Wisata (BUPERTA), Cibubur, East Jakarta, QCI shared joy and happiness with  450 orphans from Jakarta, Banten, dan West Jawa. Other than contests, orphans watched theatrical performance and got involved in many games. The winners of all competitions brought with them cups and educational prizes, such as books and puzzles.  

 

World Orphans day is annual commemoration held worldwide to increase public awareness on the condition of orphans. According to www.worldorphand.org, there are 153 millions of orphans in the world. Accordingly, as one of world humanitarian organizations, Qatar Charity has been assisting more than 50 thousand orphans in many countries, including Indonesia. Through its office in Indonesia, Qatar Charity has been supporting more than two thousand orphans in six provinces.
